With William T. Wiley, one of America’s most beloved major artists, on board , GALERIE 103, located in Kauai's Kukui'ula Village, is honored to announce the celebration of its grand opening on August 21st.
GALERIE 103 seeks to bring together a broad cross-section of national and international artists and will feature significant works of high-quality art, including contemporary and modern art that reflects the island's unique environment past and present. The art at GALERIE 103 will know no boundaries, thereby challenging misconceptions about regionalism and ethnic origin.
With the importance of global environmental issues, Hawaii has become (as it should be) one of the centers of conceptual awareness and critical debate, especially about global environmental issues, but also about many other matters shaping human destiny. ART and ISSUES should and do meet here. GALERIE 103 thus seeks to expand general awareness and to correct any lingering idea that Hawaiian art is "merely" focused on the celebration of natural beauty.
GALERIE 103 occupies a 2400-square-feet space, of which 1800 square feet is devoted to the art gallery per se and 600 square feet constitutes an annex dedicated to modern and contemporary works on paper, art objects, fiber art and art books.
GALERIE 103 inaugurates its space with a group exhibit by gallery artists including: Carol Bennett, A.Kimberlin Blackburn, Peter Bodnar, Tom Emerson, Margaret Ezekiel, Sally French, Karen Gally, Mac James, Tom Lieber, Bruna Stude, Mark Van Wagner and Wayne Zebzda.
The exhibit features the special presentation of a unique piece by William T. Wiley. The piece is one of a limited edition of 40 prints based on an original watercolor made by Wiley in the summer of 2009. The artist has used the blackboard motif at the heart of the print since 1971, when Wiley was teaching at The University of California Davis. These pieces look like old-timey school slates and contain instructions, homilies and folk wisdom. As is often the case in Wiley’s slate pieces, the recurring figure of the hourglass, “Buster Time,” stands front and center here, reminding us that time flies. The hourglass image is hand-drawn on the archival pigment print on rag paper. The paint on the palette is hand-applied, making each piece a unique original. The edition of prints is entitled, “Do Not Be Afraid.”
Peter Frank, Editor of THE magazine Los Angeles, Senior Curator at the Riverside [CA] Art Museum, and a longtime international commentator on art, observes that “The adventure of art depends on adventurous artists and adventurous audiences. These can be found anywhere – and they can go everywhere. It’s high time an adventurer in art established a beachhead in Kaua’i for adventurous art.”
