These paintings are a continuation of ideas about death and destruction I have been working with three-dimensionally for draw several decades in my mixed-media installations. While painting, I have interpreted images abstractly that I've saved for several years about the havoc wrought from hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis, and the like. Each image is coupled with a simple word, or two, based on "NO" that seemed appropriate for the particular subject matter. The variegated green colors seen in the painting, "NEVER," was inspired by the old sugar mill in Lihu'e before it was torn down. In another, the skulls reflect persons killed during the tsunami in Japan.
