OPENING RECEPTION MAR 11 2017

Inspired by H.C. Westermann's  (1922 -1981) lithograph "An Affair in the Islands"  (1972), this exhibit will feature an eclectic group of
artists for a  multi-generational survey of the island theme.

There are extraordinarily many meanings found in Merriam-Webster Dictionary of the word “affair”, including anything that might also
signify a procedure, action, or occasion only vaguely specified; also, an object or collection of objects.

While a romantic affair or a political affair are generally scandalous, an affair is not always or necessarily associated with public anxiety,
intrigue or controversy.

The exhibition itself is (an island) affair and is far from scandalous, merely suggestive, exploring the many meanings of this opulent word.
The work is laced with passion and affection, be it love and intimacy or a social commentary. Thus, the island reference varies from artist
to artist, from the island as an exotic locale and a setting for a romantic or a political affair, to the island’s landscape, or as an
artist's domicile even, or an island as an object of one's affection, all along the way challenging the island art stereotype.
