Kukui'ula, HI - September 6, 2009 - Kauai's multimedia artist Wayne Zebzda brings home his ROADTRIP installation this month with an exhibit opening at GALERIE 103 in Kukui'ula Village.

The installation series is a continually evolving group of works created using discarded traffic signs, roadside bumpers, reflective glass, even an old gray suit, and everything else Zebzda comes across in his roadside wanderings. Using drawing, sculpture, video, photography, sound – but above all, humor and intelligence – Zebzda continues his never-ending dialogue with the road and with life.

"Like Andy Warhol, Wayne Zebzda presents something familiar, transforms it through the eye of the artist, and asks us to see it differently. However, where Warhol was dour, Zebzda has a twinkle in his eye and is hell-bent on delighting the viewer,” writes Paul Janes-Brown in his review of the exhibit at The Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Maui Weekly, August 6th, 2009.

Zebzda's art is never just simple, one layered or purely entertaining; his work invites a deeper thought and his commentary reveals the complexity of human nature, vanity, and ultimately, our ability to laugh at ourselves.

"My art is produced from the random things in everyday life,” says Zebzda. “Sometimes it’s just a phrase uttered by a stranger or a jingle from TV, or it could be a sign on the side of the road or the color of the sky. Many times, a found object finds its way to my studio like a lost puppy. I usually don’t know what it’s going to become but there is an initial attraction to it so I’ll keep it around, feeding it while it feeds me in ways I’m not quite sure of. I wait for it to howl and run off on its own determined direction, leading me along on an adventure. Of course, I chase it. “

So fasten your seatbelts for a fun ride; Zebzda is on the road again starting September 12, 2009, at GALERIE 103.
