The exhibit  features works by Peter Bodnar, Chicago-area artist and art teacher who has maintained his personal vision over time, regardless of art trends and movements. Bodnar, a friend and peer to H.C.Westermann, William T. Wiley, Dennis Hopper, and many other internationally acclaimed artists, remains a mentor and father figure to his former student, Kauai's own, internationally acclaimed Tom Lieber, who proudly shows with Bodnar in this exhibition.   The youngest artist in this group is Tom's son Leaf, who was mentored by his father from the age of two.

The Bodnar-to-Lieber-to-Lieber relay comprises an exhibition of works by an art family in which family ties are based as much on patterns of mentoring as they are formed through DNA -- artists generating not just art, but other artists.

“Lieber’s success has been considerable, and he is well known and respected throughout the country and in many other parts of the world. It frustrates him that his mentor has not enjoyed the same exposure and accolade. Bodnar’s work is, if anything, even more distinctive and compelling than his student’s; indeed, although it bears some superficial resemblance to mid-American Funk art (notably that produced in nearby Chicago) and, more recently, to more cartoony versions of “Pop surrealism” (a/k/a “lowbrow” or “newbrow” art), it is quite like nothing else produced by any artist anywhere on the planet. Perhaps this solitary quality, this uniqueness, is exactly what estranges Bodnar’s painting from the public it deserves. As least as likely, however, is Bodnar’s own modesty, his refusal to compete in the admittedly tiresome commercial and museological realms of his métier, and above all his dedication, to a fault, to his teaching. He has sacrificed his public face for the sake of his mentorship.”

Peter Bodnar will give a lecture on Sunday, October 11th 2009 at GALERIE 103 at 11am.
