ART by HAWAI'I ARTISTS

March 6th - April 24th, 2010

Curated by Inger Tully, Curator of Exibitions, The Contemporary Museum Honolulu

A-HA features six artists currently living on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu and Maui. Utilizing unusual materials and processes to create their pieces the artists’ choice of media is often specific to their underlying concept or idea. The resulting works in two and three dimensions are, as the title suggests, surprising and unexpected.

Gruntled Funk- An Alter World Created By Ryan Higa.

Ryan Higa is an Oahu, Hawaii born and raised artist. After receiving a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Hawaii, Higa went on to earn his M.F.A. from University of Michigan in 1998. After graduate school and a summer printmaking workshop in Japan, Higa returned to Hawaii where in 2001, the alter-world of Gruntled Funk was created.

The world of Gruntled Funk represents a series of works depicting the strange, humorous world hovering between cute and the sinister. Many of the characters and landscapes represent encounters in Higa’s artistic, academic and cultural life experiences. Gruntled Funk seeks to stir the artist that lives inside its audience. Higa’s art practice is focused on whimsical paintings and sculptures that keep people smiling, curious and open.

Higa’s work can be found in the collection of The Contemporary Museum and in private collections in the U.S., Japan and Europe. His art has been featured in exhibitions in Hawaii and cities such as Seattle, Ann Arbor, Philadelphia and Memphis. Among many accomplishments, Higa has served on the Honolulu Printmakers’ Board of Directors and also was an Instructor at the Academy Art Center at Linekona.

WENDY KAWABATA

Stemma, 2007

kukui nuts, thread, bell jars

approx.  16"H 48"W x 60"L

Using materials such as piles of logs and recycled books Kawabata’s evolving bodies of work explore the relationship between process, repetition, and material…“My process of making is closely related to both drawing and to the history of utilitarian feminine craft. Repetitive and meditative acts: wrapping, poking, folding, stacking, hooking, pulling - all make space for quiet, association, and attentiveness.

Wendy Kawabata has been an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at
the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa since 2005. Her works have been exhibited
in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions including Loyola University,
Chicago, IL; Hera Gallery, Wakefield, RI; Rochester Contemporary Gallery,
Rochester, NY; and Steps Gallery, Melbourne, Australia. She received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art, and her Master of
Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico

"Sailing is a metaphor for life. We sail our own vessels, making adjustments along the way, to what life (the wind and the seas) throws at us. With never two moments the same, a ceaseless metamorphosis, life is one continuous but changing pattern. Inconsistency is consistent. We base our adjustments on our past experiences (baggage) and the genes (jeans) we are given, nature via nurture. Steering our vessel, reflecting on unique experiences and intuitions."
